The Waterboys - This Is The Sea - 1985

Tercer album en la discografía de la banda y el último de lo que llamaron "big music".Fue lanzado entre setiembre y octubre de 1985 a ambos lados del atlántico.
La banda liderada por Mike Scott recibió muchos elogios de la crítica por éste trabajo, definiéndolo como "épico" o "momento definitorio"

THE PAN WITHIN

Lynn Goldsmith realizó la fotografía de portada.
Steve Wickham hizo su debut grabando con la banda, tocando el violín en "The Pan Within", tras lo cual se integra oficialmente a la formación, apareciendo en el vídeo de LA canción "The Whole of the Moon". El  álbum es el último en contar con la contribución de Karl Wallinger, quien abandona para formar su propia banda, World Party.
Mike Scott, líder y principal compositor, describe "This Is the Sea" como el disco en el cual "logré todas mis ambiciones musicales juveniles", la definitiva y totalmente realizada expresión del sonido original de losWaterboys, influenciado por The Velvet Underground, Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, y Steve Reich.
Una versión remasterizada y expandida fue editada en 2004.
"This Is the Sea" contiene su más exitoso single, la exquisita canción "The Whole of the Moon".
