Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) es un grupo británico de rock progresivo natural de Birmingham (Inglaterra) y liderada por el músico Jeff Lynne.1 La ELO se formó para dar cabida al deseo de Lynne y de Roy Wood de crear canciones de rock modernas con tintes clásicos. Después de la salida de Wood, tras el lanzamiento del álbum debut, Lynne se convirtió en el líder del grupo y compuso, arregló y produjo todas las canciones y trabajos de la formación. Entre 1971 y 1986, durante su época de mayor actividad, el grupo publicó once álbumes y obtuvo una notable popularidad con trabajos como A New World Record, Out of the Blue y Discovery.

A pesar del éxito de sus primeros sencillos en el Reino Unido, el grupo obtuvo una mayor popularidad en los Estados Unidos, donde se convirtieron en una de las bandas con mayores ventas de la industria musical. TODO ESTÁ AQUÍ: Desde su primera y fundamental obra sobre Poe, que ya comentamos aquí hace tiempo; hasta "The sicilian defense"su trabajo hasta ahora inédito, que tiene un carácter bastante experimental.
Desde álbumes exquisitos como "The turn..." hasta trabajos algo más flojos y comerciales como "Stereotomy" o "Vulture...", pero que de todos modos tienen sus momentos altos y muy disfrutables en mi opinión.

David Bowie - Labyrinth - 1986

"Labyrinth" ("Laberinto" en Latinoamérica; "Dentro del laberinto" en España) es una película de fantasía de 1986, claramente inspirada en clásicos de la literatura fantástica.Una sencilla película orientada al público infantil y pre adolescente en la que muchas cosas buenas confluyeron: George Lucas ofició de productor ejecutivo.Jim Henson la coprodujo y dirigió, con todo un elenco de sus marionetas mágicas.

Y por si fuera poco, los protagonistas de carne y hueso fueron una jovencita Jennifer Connelly y el maestro David Bowie.

No podemos olvidarnos del tercer actor real, el bebé Toby Froud , hijo del diseñador Brian Froud ("The Dark Crystal", 1982, también con la dirección de Henson), responsable de la mayoría de los diseños para el filme.
La banda sonora corre a cargo de Trevor Jones.
Y por supuesto...incluye también cinco canciones del gran David Bowie.

Sinópsis (Wikipedia)

Una noche el padre y la madrasta de Sarah —una adolescente con una imaginación desbordante— se preparan para salir a una reunión. Para ello, la joven, inconforme, debe quedarse a cargo de su medio hermano Toby para cuidarlo. La chica, enfadada por tener que lidiar con el pequeño quien no deja de llorar, en un arrebato pide (casi inadvertidamente) al Rey de los Duendes, Jareth —un personaje de su libro de fantasía favorito llamado Laberinto— que se lleve consigo a su hermano. Sin prever que daría resultado y su deseo se cumpliría, a continuación el Rey Jareth se muestra ante ella diciéndole que para recuperar a su hermano cuenta con 13 horas en cuyo transcurso debe resolver su laberinto y llegar hasta su castillo, si es que quiere evitar que Toby se convierta en un duende.

Durante su aventura, el rey intentará impedir que Sarah llegue a su meta, poniéndola a prueba con juegos mentales, acertijos difíciles e innumerables trampas a lo largo del laberinto, que constantemente cambia. En tanto, durante su recorrido, irá conociendo nuevos amigos, entre ellos un enano un tanto irritable llamado Hoggle, un monstruo lanudo de nombre Ludo (que posee la habilidad de comunicarse con las rocas y piedras) y un singular y muy valiente caballero andante de largos bigotes que se presenta como Sir Didymus, quienes le ayudarán a lograr su objetivo. Al final, una vez que se enfrenta con el rey para recuperar a su hermano, Sarah se encontrará ante una encrucijada en la que debe decidir si sigue soñando en cuentos de hadas o aceptar la realidad de que va dejando de ser una niña.

Alan Parsons - A valid path - 2004

Cuarto trabajo bajo su propio nombre tras la separación de su socio Eric Woolfson en The Alan Parsons Project. En los tres precedentes como Alan Parsons,ha contado con invitados especiales además de algunos miembros históricos del project, como el guitarrista Ian Bairnson o el arreglista y conductor Andrew Powell.
En "A valid path", ya no hay en absoluto miembros del Project, pero cuenta con colaboradores de lujo y mucha sangre nueva,como el  vocalista y compositor P.J.Olsson o Jeremy Parsons, su hijo.

El tema instrumental que abre el álbum cuenta nada menos que con el legendario guitarrista de Pink Floyd, además de Shpongle.

RETURN TO TUNGUSKA (CON SHPONGLE Y DAVID GILMOUR)

Desde luego Parsons a través de los años ha sabido brindarnos excelentes temas instrumentales, netamente electrónicos o integrando sintetizadores y orquesta.

Éste es un álbum en el que no faltan conexiones con el pasado pero en el que  es evidente un cambio de dirección, con énfasis en los sonidos de la música electrónica del momento. 

Uno de los temas vocales cuya melodía remite bastante al sonido de A.P.P., en la que Parsons se hace cargo de la voz principal, con la colaboración de The Crystal Method.

WE PLAY THE GAME (CON THE CRYSTAL METHOD)

De la colaboración con el Nortec Collective surge una pieza instrumental ambiental, con un sonido muy original y sugestivo.De lo mejor.

TIJUANIAC (CON NORTEC COLLECTIVE)

Algo más que un remix, es ésta versión en "mashup" de los dos tracks que abren el excelente primer álbum del Project, "Tales of mistery and imagination": "A dream within a dream" y "The raven" en plan tecno:

En setiembre de 2005 vimos al "Alan Parsons Live Project" en Montevideo, Uruguay.
Por supuesto "Return to Tunguska" fue el tema que abrió aquella noche inolvidable.
Parsons promocionaba así "A valid path" rodeado como siempre con músicos de primera, pero se destacó y brilló especialmente en escena P.J.Olsson, poniéndole voz impecablemente a muchos clásicos de The Alan Parsons Project.

Branford Marsalis - I heard you twice the first time - 1992

Un disco que siempre escucho dos veces seguidas cada vez (sic).

No soy un gran cultor ni conocedor del jazz, pero éste es un trabajo absolutamente disfrutable de principio a fin. Y más contando aquí el mayor de los Marsalis con la participación de dos notables bluesmen: B.B.King y John Lee Hooker.

Para mi gusto, es un excelente chapuzón sónico para empaparse del mejor jazz y el mejor blues.

King wails with the hurt inflected by his mate's infidelity ("B.B.'s Blues"), or John Lee Hooker similarly bares his soul ("Mabel"), or Linda Hopkins underscores the gospel influence of the church on blues music ("The Road You Choose"), we get the hear personalized tales drenched with a stark emotionalism yet rendered universal by the blues.

Branford recognizes that everything he has ever voiced musically springs form that - from the human condition, coupled with the blues dialectic, coupled with the musician's need to express himself.  It's no small responsibility to accept that challenge of expression, much less to meet it artfully.

His goal, as he explained to the Philadelphia Inquirer's Tom Moon, is to reclaim "the folk and peasant aspects of black society that most jazz people disassociate themselves form as quickly as possible."  To that end, he invited some masters to lend a hand.

I HEARD YOU TWICE THE FIRST TIME doesn't just spotlight these few blues greats whose credentials virtually define the idiom.  The album features, among others, Branford's long-term group members Kenny Kirkland (piano), Robert Hurst (bass), and Jeff  'Tain' Watts (drums), players who have helped the leader shape his musical point of view.  (Hurst emerges as a bluesman in his own right with his cheeky composition, "Brother Trying to Catch a Cab [On the East Side] Blues.")

Add to the mix the production input of younger brother Delfeayo Marsalis (who supervised the recording at seven different studios in New York, New Orleans and the West Coast, and in one elementary school), and you have an album that is truly a family (of jazz) affair.

Big Calm es el segundo álbum de Morcheeba, y fue editado en marzo de 1998.

PART OF THE PROCESS

Para mi el presente trabajo es como un buen vino, pues con el correr de los años me ha llegado a gustar mucho más que en su momento lo realizado por ésta interesantísima banda abanderada del trip hop en su momento, pero difícil de encasillar a la ligera.Por supuesto que recomiendo también el anterior y el que le sigue a Big Calm, es decir respectivamente "Who Can You Trust?" de 1996, y "Fragments of Freedom" de 2000.Se merecen una escucha atenta cada tanto tiempo.

Los hermanos Godfrey, ya sea con la excelente cantante Skye o con las sustitutas que reclutaran posteriormente saben crear en sus canciones un clima único y un pop muy sofisticado y elegante.A partir del 2000 Skye vuelve a la formación con los Godfrey.
La cubierta del álbum esta inspirada en la de la compilación de 1966 de Ray Conniff "Hi Fi Companion."
